How to Enable YouTube Data API v3 in Google Cloud

Welcome to Part 2 of Automate YouTube Shorts with Python. In this tutorial, we will enable YouTube Data API v3 in the Google Cloud project we created earlier. I am using Dumb IT Dude Shorts Maker; choose your own project before following the screenshots.

New to the series? Start with Part 1: create a Google Cloud project. If you entered the wrong project name, our rename a Google Cloud project guide shows how to fix the display name without starting again.

Open the API Library

Step 1: Open Google Cloud Console and select your project using the picker in the top bar. Check the name carefully, especially if you manage several channels.

Step 2: Open the navigation menu, choose APIs & Services, and click Enabled APIs & services. This opens the API dashboard for the selected project.

Alternative route: On your project dashboard, look for Getting Started and click Explore and enable APIs. Use whichever route is easier to find in your console layout.

Step 3: Click Enable APIs and services near the top of the API dashboard. This opens the library where you choose the service to add.

Enable APIs and services button at the top of the project API dashboard.

The API Library contains many Google services. You do not need to enable everything shown here; we only need the YouTube service for this stage of the tutorial.

Find and Enable YouTube Data API v3

Step 4: Search for YouTube Data API v3 in the library search field. Alternatively, scroll to the YouTube section shown below.

Choose YouTube Data API v3, not YouTube Analytics API or YouTube Reporting API. Those are separate services and are not the one we are enabling in this guide.

Step 5: On the product details page, check that the title says YouTube Data API v3 and the publisher is Google. Then click Enable and wait for the console to finish.

Step 6: Confirm that the service details page shows Status: Enabled. You should also see a Disable API button, which means the service is already on. Do not click that button; it would turn the API off again.

In addition, the notification panel can confirm success with an Enable service message for youtube.googleapis.com. You can also double-check the service under APIs & Services > Enabled APIs & services.

If the page already shows Enabled or Disable API when you arrive, there is nothing more to enable for this project. If you receive a permissions error instead, check your signed-in account and ask the project administrator to review your access.

The project is ready for the next setup stage, but enabling the API alone does not authorize uploads or changes to your channel. We will configure Google Auth Platform, create OAuth credentials and sign in to the intended YouTube account in the following tutorials.

What Comes After You Enable YouTube Data API v3?

Next, keep the same project selected for the OAuth setup. Enabling a service and granting channel access are separate steps. However, you do not need the Analytics or Reporting APIs for this upload workflow.

For the official setup requirements, see Google’s YouTube Data API getting-started guide.
