How to Create a New Partition in Windows

If you have just one drive or maybe two and you want more drives on your system, our how to create a new partition in Windows tutorial will come in handy.

Sometimes just one isn’t enough.

Primarily, because you don’t want all your personal data to go into your System Drive where all the important Operating System related files are housed. It is also advisable to go for another drive when you want to format your Windows drive. You can take backup in your second drive and then completely format and reinstall Windows in the first one.

How to Create a New Partition in Windows

If you want to learn how to create a new partition in Windows, just follow the below mentioned steps.

Step 1: Right click on This PC and then on More > Manage.

If you have your This PC or My Computer located on the Desktop, you can simply right click on it, and then select Manage.

Doing so will open the Computer Management window.

Step 2: Click open Disk Management located under Storage, as shown in the image below:

It will take you to the graphical representation of the drives on your system. Might look something like this.

Step 3: Just right click on the drive you wish to partition (in my case C: drive).

Right Clicking will show some options.

Step 4: Select Shrink Volume.

Step 5: In the next window of Shrink Drive dialog, Click on Shrink.

Doing so will create an unallocated space on your system.

Naming the Partition

Now is the time to allocate the unallocated space and provide a proper drive name for it.

Step 6: Just right click on the unallocated space and select the New Simple Volume option.

It will open you a new simple volume wizard.

Step 7: Click on Next.

The next screen will ask you to specify a volume size. If you don’t want any other drive you can simply go ahead with the flow.

Step 8: Just click on Next.

Before you proceed to store data on your newly created hard disk volume, it is advisable to format it first.

Step 9: You can make no changes in the next screen, and simply click on Next. There is no need to choose a different File System. NTFS will be selected by default. You can rename the drive of course by replacing “New Volume” with anything of your choice.

Next screen would be more like an information telling you that you have completed the new simple volume wizard, and all that you want to do will be executed.

Step 10: Just click on Finish.

When you click on Finish you will notice that the new partition has been created.

You can go to your This PC or My Computer and check it out for real.
