How to Disable Auto Updates on Google Chrome

We will see how to disable auto updates on Google Chrome in this tutorial. I know you are miffed enough by how Google automatically updates your Chrome browser. You will be vexed more when you are performing testing on a previous version of the browser, and with automatic updates always on, it automatically updates your browser to the latest version. Whilst it must be good from a user point of view, it isn’t to those who are either developing or testing web applications on the browser.

Earlier it was easy to disable the auto updates option using the Plugins option. But nowadays even that option is gone. Don’t worry there is a pretty easy workaround to disable auto updates on Google Chrome.

Steps on How to Disable Auto Updates on Google Chrome

Step 1: Close Google Chrome or any instances of it that might be open in your Task Manager.

Step 2: Navigate to the Google folder in your system. It must be present in the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Google

You might get something like this when you open the Google folder:

Step 3: Look for the folder called “Update”. Right-click on it and then select Rename. Or you can simply select it and press F2.

Step 4: Rename the folder to something else. I have just made it ‘Update2’. Then press Enter.

It might or might not give you the following dialog box:

It depends whether or not you have admin User Access Control to make changes on C: drive.

Step 5: Just click on Continue.

That’s it!

Alternatively, you can choose to take a backup of the Update folder and save it somewhere else, and then delete it from here.

The trick is basically to stop Google Chrome from accessing the Update folder.

When there is no Update folder available, it can’t update it right? So that’s how you stop Google from updating itself to the latest version available.
