Alright so you have been using Google Adsense for a while now and suddenly you get an Opportunities message saying that you can now use Matched Content Ad unit on your website. The matched content ad unit is nothing but a special ad unit that engages your audience in more of your content. So your readers will direct themselves to a post from your website by clicking on a link that your post automatically chooses. You know it is very similar to related content.

I will show you this by using an example of one of my very own website Straight From a Movie.

Steps on How to Add Matched Content Ad Unit on Your Website

Here’s a step by step tutorial teaching you How to Add Matched Content Ad Unit on Your Website. Before we begin you must log in to your Google Adsense account.

Step 1: Navigate to My Ads. Then click on Ad Units.

Step 2: Next click on New Ad Unit button available in the next screen.

Step 3: From a variety of options available now click on Select under Matched Content.

Check Eligibility

One way to check eligibility is that you might have received a mail saying that there is a Matched Content opportunity available. If you are not sure about the mail, then you can simply check it here:

Step 4: Right after Step 3, you will get the customization page. Here you can see which all sites are eligible for Matched content. Here at the top, it’s showing mine is.

Step 5: On the right-hand side sidebar, provide a name for the ad unit before clicking on the Ad options.

Here make sure the Monetize with Ads button is on or highlighted.

Step 6: Click on the next bar which is being highlighted as style. You can choose to change it or leave it as is. Default is fine too.

Step 7: Then comes the Size option. Click on it. Responsive might be selected by default. You can leave it as is.

and then eventually click on Save and Get Code button.

Step 8: Next page will give you the code snippet. Copy it by clicking on Copy Code Snippet button.

Pasting the Code Snippet

Step 9: Go to your dashboard or admin page. Then click on Appearance > Editor

Step 10: Now you have to paste it inside the <body> tag. You can paste it in any preferred location. I am going to paste it in the Footer. So it will come right after my footer.

Looking for the footer.php file on the right, I am clicking on it.

It has opened its editor page. Now press Ctrl + V or Right Click > Paste before the <body> tag ends viz. </body>

Here is how it will look after the snippet code has been pasted.

Step 11: Click on Update File button once you are done.

Step 12: Once you click on Update File you will get the following notification.

That’s it! Wait for the changes to take place. Check after half an hour or maybe an hour just to be safe, for the Matched content ad unit to reflect. This is how it is showing now on my page:
